The Catholic religion, the most practiced religion in the world, can be seen as the common environment for the origin of the Bible which is the oldest book known to date. The Bible tells of many great ancient stories that have been somewhat forgotten; In Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Márquez, biblical allusions are used throughout the novel comparing symbolism and imagery to the Bible and the Roman Catholic religion. The main focus of interest in the novel is the murder of Santiago Nasar which can be compared to the murder and acts against Jesus Christ. Acts and images of other actions that take place in the novel can be referred to the Bible of the Roman Catholic religion. Santiago Nasar, the main protagonist of the novel, is murdered for no other reason than the honor killing of the Vicario twins. Santiago on the morning of the murder “Santiago wore a white linen shirt and trousers” (5); White is the color of innocence, the same color that Jesus in the Bible wore on the same day of his death and white is used to express Santiago's innocence. From the beginning of the book we know that the bishop is coming to town and knowing that religion comes from the novel the reader should assume that there must be a symbolic representation dealing with religion in the novel. The main allusions that can relate the character of Santiago to Jesus of the Catholic religion should be his death. “The knife went through the palm of his right hand and then sank into his side up to the hilt. Everyone heard his cry of pain” (139); The knife going through the hand is a comparison to the way Jesus was nailed to the cross during his death, not just any cross, a wooden cross just like the... center of the card... allusions shown in the novel provide a greater understanding of Roman Catholicism and the story of Jesus. As the days pass and we live our lives, we begin to forget the old stories that once united our world. By reading you can develop the true story behind Santiago's assassination and how his story is just like that of Jesus Christ. The reader gains knowledge of one of the oldest stories with the help of this novel. The power of the Roman Catholic Church has a powerful effect on the world around this novel and the world today and through the novel we see the effect of the seven deadly sins that are a part of society that we do not see with the naked eye. Furthermore, the reader should understand more deeply how the seven sins are related to people and the daily lives of human beings. If we don't learn from the stories of the past we are condemned to repeat them.
