Topic > Lung Cancer: Causes and Effects of Lung Cancer

Cancer could be prevented through various healthy lifestyle and nutrition choices, however, it cannot be stopped completely. This may be due to external factors and the choices you make. One environmental factor is exposure to radon in the home. Radon is a radioactive gas produced by the natural decay of uranium in the soil and is found in areas such as cracks in the foundations of homes. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and the leading cause for non-smokers. According to Environmental Causes of Lung Cancer, approximately 21,000 people develop lung cancer due to radon each year. A person's occupation may also lead to an increased risk of lung cancer. One occupational exposure is working with asbestos, such as working with asbestos insulation in homes. Without adequate protection, excessive exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer. Even with precautions, sometimes cancer cannot be stopped. However, this does not mean that a person should be careless in daily choices. To lead an anti-cancer lifestyle, every individual should exercise daily, for at least 30 minutes, eating healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, and not sugary and processed foods. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), an estimated 30% to 40% of cancers could be prevented based on a healthy diet and moderate exercise alone. Every choice
