Enhanced interrogation techniques were used in previous administrations. The techniques were considered cruel and inhumane to say the least. Among these are attention shots and stress positions. The techniques violate human rights as well as the rights of prisoners. There are few serious arguments in favor of maintaining enhanced interrogations. The most convincing is the “ticking bomb theory”. This theory is in fact based on a logical fallacy. An executive order banned the use of enhanced interrogations. The position of this summary is that the current ban remains in place. Torture is the intentional infliction of extreme physical suffering on a defenseless, non-consenting person. Torture in any form is used to punish, coerce, or give sadistic pleasure. Torture lite is a form of torturing someone without leaving a mark. These techniques include "waterboarding," submerging or submerging in water to produce the sensation of drowning, and denying food, water, or sleep for days or weeks at a time. Techniques used by the CIA and military in the wake of 2001 included stress positions, strikes, sensory and sleep deprivation. These enhanced interrogation techniques have been compared to torture and light torture. Although strikes, stress positions, and deprivations do not leave lasting marks, in an investigation conducted by John Helgerson, Inspector General of the CIA (Jehl 2005), they were found to constitute “cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment.” ” in which an inmate's shoulders or clothing are grabbed and may be shaken.
