I can agree with most of what Horney said about neurosis based on cultural circumstances. His education was the core of his theories. He developed them based on personal experiences and not what his patients felt. I realize that some people deal with certain situations like anxiety based on habits, while you describe defense mechanisms. I am sure that people with similar childhoods to his, with distant family, are more likely to identify with his theories. Based on my personal experiences, I could relate to most of Freud's theories. To be more specific, I agree with the theory of defense mechanisms and the conscious and unconscious. I have found these mechanisms used by a large number of people. The individual suffers from anxiety and takes his stress out on others, as described by Freud in the displacement method. I personally have used sublimation and released my anger into healthier activities such as sports.
