He never really "protected" her or the baby while she was pregnant with daddy's baby. Jaja spoke of raising his fist and protecting the unborn child from Daddy's abuse, desperately trying to prevent a repeat of disturbing events by preventing Daddy from abusing his mother to the point of causing another miscarriage. But Jaja was helpless when the time came. He said, “We will take care of the child; we will protect him” (Adichie 23). Yet, he sat in his room and listened as his mother was beaten until she was covered in blood, and his father, his mother's attacker, had to drop her on his shoulders like lumber and carry her to the hospital. Almost cowardly, believing he has no power to intervene, Jaja retreats, saying, “There's blood on the floor…I'll get the brush from the bathroom” (Adichie 33). In the end, Jaja failed in her self-proclaimed task of protecting the baby and, with all that talk, left the action omitted in her plans, resulting in mom's second miscarriage. “There was an accident, the child is gone” (Adichie 34). Jaja said he would do what he could to protect the family, making it his responsibility regardless of his age or identity, meaning his mother losing a child and allowing his father to do/let that happen is also his responsibility . He should have at least tried to protect his mother like he said, instead of standing helplessly and allowing her
