It does this by providing personal accounts of this horrific discrimination and using descriptive vocabulary that causes the audience to notice a sense of knowing within the author. He begins to discuss the judgment he faced by stating "I got used to but never felt comfortable with people crossing to the other side of the street rather than passing me" (Staples, 189) which allowed the audience to put themselves as the Staples and somewhat experience the treatment he endured on a daily basis because of his appearance. The author also justifies his credibility by providing further examples such as when he was racially profiled in a jewelry store to the point that a worker brought out a red Doberman pinscher. By implementing these appeals to ethics, Staples was able to effectively convince the audience that he was a credible witness regarding these unjustifiable acts by describing to the reader events he himself experienced. He was able to bring forward this example that not only various African American males could identify with, but also an example that he himself personally endured and which helped him further strengthen his argument and successfully draw the audience to his.
