The failure of technology to be a remedy to all educational problems, as seen by Atwell, however, is a Strawman. Although some schools issue a laptop, iPad, or iPod to each student (Wong ¶ 4, Davidson ¶ 14), the act of providing technology to students is not the same as teaching the student how to successfully use that technology academically. Atwell believes that introducing more devices into the classroom distracts children from learning, but should this really be surprising given the circumstances? Educators give a child an iPad without an explanation of how to use it or a solid plan for how to integrate the iPad into prepared teaching. Naturally, the children will get distracted with this new device that has been handed to them and which apparently does not fit the lesson. “I am shocked that we talk about technology as if it were a discipline or a school subject,” says Atwell (Wong par. 19), showing her deeply conservative views on the advancement of education. The integration of technology into students' daily lives will not change, but if teachers refuse to embrace such integration, it should come as no surprise that they are fighting a losing battle for children's attention and awareness..
