Since the European invasion in 1788, indigenous Australians have fought to maintain their rights and freedoms and to be recognized by governments. Over time, state and Commonwealth governments have implemented policies that have discriminated against Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, denying them equality, opportunity and control over their own lives and the lives of their children (Jacaranda, 2012). Indigenous Australians have been politically active in demanding their rights. Charles Perkins was an Aboriginal activist who fought for recognition, justice and legal recognition for indigenous people. To a large extent Charles Perkins had an impact on the civil rights of indigenous Australians; significantly advancing human rights and paving the way for reconciliation. Many events during Charles Perkins' life contributed to his values and beliefs, encouraging him to take up the fight for Aboriginal rights and thus helping to shape Australian society.
