Topic > Analysis of 12 Years a Slave and Secrets and Lies

For this article I saw the films 12 Years a Slave and Secrets and Lies. The first film I mentioned is about slavery in 19th century America, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as Northup Solomon. It is actually based on the novel by Northup Solomon, a middle-class citizen. He wrote this novel after years of slavery. He was a black man who was kidnapped and then sold into slavery. Northup already has a wife and two children when he is kidnapped. Before becoming a slave, he worked as a violinist and lived in New York with his small family. One day, two men want him to travel with them to Washington and promise to offer him a job as a musician upon their return. He accepts their request and the three men go to Washington. What Northup didn't know was that these two men would not offer him a job in exchange but would kidnap him. At dinner in Washington they drug him and then lock him in a cellar where he is also chained. A white man first tortures him and calls him Platt, an escaped slave from Georgia. She asks him his name and begins to beat him because he replies that his name is Northup and not Platt and that he is actually a free man. This white man then takes him to New Orleans by ship where they sell him to William Ford as a slave. He starts working for him but one day a seer called John Tibeats attacks him and Northup fights back. After this accident, its owner Ford has to sell it to Edwin Epps because otherwise Tibeats will kill him. After working on Epps' plantation for several years, the sheriff goes to visit Northup one day. She begins to ask him questions about his previous life and as soon as she notices that the answers given coincide with their way of acting. Their facial expressions and awkward silences kept me interested. I enjoyed watching this movie because the story was easy to understand. I didn't have to stop to play a scene just to figure out what was happening. The actors spoke very clearly and this is very important to me because I never want to focus on subtitles when they are not necessary. What I didn't like about Secrets and Lies was the character Cynthia. He did not have a mature manner and kept crying instead of solving his problems by seeking a solution. What surprised me was Hortense's mature demeanor. Her mother should definitely take her as an example and learn to behave well. I expected her to be very angry and full of hatred towards her mother, but instead she behaved with modesty, discretion and purity. Once again, I realized that secrets and lies will get us nowhere.
