Reality might include the Newspeak dictionary. Newspeak is the official and fictional language of Oceania. Newspeak contains no negative words and is designed to eliminate the possibility of wayward thoughts. The inhabitants of Oceania think that every single word contained in this dictionary is true and credible even if it says 2+2=5. Another symbol in the novel besides Newspeak is Winston's dreams. He dreams that he might have been the cause of his mother's death when he wasn't. He also dreams of O'Brien and it seems that in his dream O'Brien serves as a positive figure in his life when in reality he ends up controlling the torture he received in the Ministry of Love. In conclusion, the saying “all is not as it seems” fits the theme of Appearance vs. Reality in the 1984 novel. Throughout the story, more and more lies evolve and become reality for the common citizens of Oceania. The ministries give a different meaning than what they describe in the title, the characters evolve into undercover spies where they then turn their backs on Winston, and several symbols foreshadow secrets and lies to the reader. Everyone in totalitarian Oceania is a slave to Big Brother and unfortunately believes everything the government tells them
