All people around the world believe in something, but what stops them from giving up on their dreams is the simple idea of hope: the concept that whatever dreams can become their reality. Even so, one must be persistent in one's actions as things are not simply handed out in life. You have to work for what you want, putting in your maximum effort until the end. Both hope and perseverance are two key ingredients when striving for success, such that both combined can help lead anyone to their dreams. The American dream of success can only be achieved by those who are willing to put in all the effort and sacrifice necessary to reach the desired destination. Hope has been a prevalent theme throughout American literature. Gatsby, since his first meeting with Daisy, could not think of anything other than spending his life with her, as there was something different about her than all the other girls. After his long absence, Daisy married the stern Tom Buchanan, believing that she would never meet Gatsby again after waiting so long for his return. Once Gatsby was in West Egg, he met Daisy and then wanted to try to win her back and convince her to leave Tom and marry him. He would do his best to win back her love with all his "new money" and the extravagant lifestyle he lived. Throughout the novel, he showed his perseverance in his goal every time he went out with Daisy: driving his white Rolls Royce, always wearing his best clothes, inviting her to his colossal mansion, and taking her to lavish parties. “I thought of Gatsby's wonder when he first spotted the green light… his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly help but catch it.” (Fitzgerald 189) It was in this quote that Nick, the novel, confirmed Gatsby's eternal hope for some kind of future where he and Daisy are happily together. Gatsby never gave up on that idea and always worked to make it a reality, until his death, when he was killed by a gunshot. Many tests were conducted by Dr. Charles R. Snyder, the psychologist whose work inspired the article, and there were different results for all the people studied. “Students with great hope set higher goals and know how to work to achieve them,” Dr. Snyder said, as he demonstrated that hope is the main driving force for people. The simple idea of being able to achieve something they want allows people to continue to find ways to progress so they can achieve what they want. It also allows people to push themselves so they can't be satisfied with where they are, and to show that they are hungry for more success and to show that failure is not an option for them. The same study showed that a person's level of hope can greatly influence their mental health. They noted that people with lower levels of hope showed a weaker work ethic, less social interaction, strong signs of depression, and some even reported suicidal thoughts. However, hope also shows positive signs on people's mental health. High levels of hope have allowed people to handle stress much better than others with low hope; therefore, being able to better adapt to situations and manage them
