Field hockey can also be called hockey. It is a team sport in which a team of players attempts to score a goal by pushing, hitting or throwing a ball into the opposing team's goal using sticks. The term field hockey would only be used in countries where the simple term hockey was used for different forms such as ice hockey, street hockey etc. Field hockey has a myriad of international tournaments by gender, men's and women's, although in some countries such as the United States, field hockey is mostly played by women. Major tournaments, for example, Olympic Games - held every four years, World Hockey Cup (men's and women's) - held every four years (between the Olympics), Hockey Asia Cup - held every two years (between Olympics), Champions Trophy - currently held annually (for the top 6 ranked nations) Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament - held annually in Malaysia (an invitational tournament) Champions Challenge - held every two years for teams ranked 7th to 12th globally, the Commonwealth Games, and the Junior World Cup sponsors field hockey. The world governing body is the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The International Hockey Federation is divided into groups and is part of the Hockey Rules Board which produces the sport's own rules. The International Hockey Federation also organizes events for the World Cup of Hockey and the Women's World Cup of Hockey. Field hockey is full of players who can be juniors or seniors. Regardless of the sport's large membership, most members do not play as full-time professionals. Field hockey is known for being the team sport with the third largest number of participants in the world. In areas where winters are harsh, outdoor sports are prohibited. There are several rules in this sport that make it unique and different from others.
