Holocene Extinction (6th Mass Extinction)Did you know that humans had the power to create a mass extinction event? For 12,000 years, the Holocene extinction has devastated life on earth; it branches into almost all taxonomic groups: birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and arthropods. Between 1500 and 2010, only 875 extinctions were documented, but according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources there are around 140,000 extinctions per year. Over the last 12,000 years, all over the world, a wide variety of animals have been exterminated due to human activity. Extinctions occur everywhere in the world which presents increasingly fluctuating weather conditions. Before the industrial revolution, before humans pumped greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, the earth was moderately temperate. Today the average temperature is 64° F, nearly 10° F above normal. Due to climate change, the polar ice caps are melting, making the Arctic inhospitable for numerous taxonomic groups, now in danger of extinction. Since all the glaciers are melting, the newly liquefied water flows into the oceans. Rising sea levels devastate coastal ecology, erode beaches and inundate farmland. This affects the habitats of plants, birds and marine life, meaning they no longer have a safe place to have their young. Without new offspring, the species ceases to exist. The continents most affected by the Holocene extinction are North and South America because that is where most of the megafauna lived thousands of years ago; of these was the woolly mammoth. In 1800, the (hunted and deforested) ecosystem was not sufficiently resilient to protect itself from industrial......middle of paper......2100 if man continued his harmful rampage. There are currently 3,947 critically endangered and 5,766 endangered animals. The percentages of animals in danger of extinction are 41% of amphibian species, 33% of reef-forming corals, 30% of conifers, 25% of mammals and 13% of birds. Educator is the country with the highest number of animals at risk of extinction, 2,211. Since 10,000 BC, following the last ice age, numerous living beings have disappeared due to human life. People don't just do one life-threatening thing, they do dozens of them. It is disgusting that these harmful activities are still practiced. Amphibians are affected more than animals. It is natural to have a background extinction, it demonstrates a healthy ecosystem, but this sixth mass extinction has lasted too long. Human beings must correct their ways now, otherwise the consequences will be fatal.
