“What justice would it be to take this life? Justice, gentlemen? Why, I'd put a pig in the electric chair right now like in this case." This began Jefferson's spiral into prison, acting like a pig, eating food prepared for him by Mrs. Emma, on the floor without using his hands, ignoring tactlessly his own family and friends. The idea of having Jefferson walk to his death as a man, was born from the desire to change the status of black Americans in their city and in the legal system in general, Mrs. Emma leads this change in the same way she drives the rest of the story, using the relationships she had with other people to further her own goals and the advancement of African Americans In her own way, she takes on the role of a Rosa Parks figure, not championing the white man , or the predominantly white legal system, which controlled his travel.
