In 1665, in the Kingdom of England, there was a great disease that swept through the kingdom that killed over 100,000 people, it was transmitted to the entire population by small insects that were everywhere and were almost impossible to Avoid. This epidemic is known as the Great Plague of London of 1665 and is the strand of the Bubonic Plague that ravaged London, killing approximately 15% of London's population of approximately 100,000 people. This plague was one of the worst diseases to hit Europe between 1300 and 1600. It hit England especially hard because they were on an island and had nowhere to go and couldn't avoid the spread of the disease. It all started when mice were on ships crossing Europe, but the mice were infested with fleas that carried the bubonic plague. The city of London was a very poor city and much of its population lived in slums in very cramped quarters. Since a large number of the population lived in poor and dirty housing, the city was much better suited to the life of rats. The plague had been present in Britain since the early 1300s, but had slowed down a few years before. to 1665, so not many people were worried about him returning. Even though the bubonic plague had existed for hundreds of years, not many doctors at that time had any idea how to treat it. While it is not entirely certain where the plague spread from, most believe that it only came from the Netherlands due to the Netherlands' proximity to London, and that the Netherlands had serious plague problems for many years. Dutch merchant ships are believed to have brought the plague during their constant trade with English roads and spread the plague further around London. We know what happened during this time because of the eyewitness accounts of Samuel Pepys and William Boghurst, Samuel Pepys was a naval administrator and member of parliament at the time of the plague, and wrote in his diary everything he saw during the Great Plague in London. William Boghurst wrote the "Loimographia" about his eyewitness views of being a doctor during the time of the plague and describes the symptoms of the plague and actually predicted when the plague crisis would die down in 1666. William said that poor hygiene and Poor sewage disposal and poor nutrition among London's citizens led to the plague problem in the city. His book criticized all the ways of London and said they needed to be changed to prevent another plague problem they had just gone through..
