Edgar Allan Poe was a prominent and influential figure in 18th century literature. When Poe's name is mentioned, one imagines murder, unknown spirits, a pitch-black raven, and a woman's grave by the sea chanting. Poe's two poems in particular, "The Spirits of the Dead" and "The Sleeper", refer to Poe's theory and are used to express his differential views on death. Although both “Spirits of the Dead” and “The Sleeper” show dark but dreamlike aspects of death through figurative language, “Spirits of the Dead” illustrates a more optimistic idea that the dead still surround the living, while “The Sleeper " ends with the resignation to the fact that the living should move away from the dead because the dead will never return. In "The Spirits of the Dead", Poe uses the symbolism and personification of nature to hypothesize a sanguine version of death in which the i the living and the dead can still come into contact. Although a mortal "soul" may seem lonely as it walks alone in a cemetery, "The spirits of the dead who stood / ... In death around you - and their will / You they will overshadow: they will be still" (Lines 7-10). One is never truly alone with one's thoughts because the spirits of the unknown world keep constant watch. In the second stanza, "The night, though clear, will frown - And the stars will not look below / From their high thrones in the sky... But their rayless red spheres... That will cling to you forever" (Lines 11-18). In this stanza, “the stars,” which represent spirits, do not respond to the living. This clarifies the barrier between life and death, although the stars, which look down upon the living, and the night, which frowns upon the living, are far from the “soul,” regardless of their proximity. Because... in the center of the card... childhood memories and to ease the loss he felt due to their sudden deaths. Poe left a legacy in the writing of history. His ideas about the pattern between life and death inspired other writers and encouraged the development of the unknown beyond the boundaries of science. Although the death of his loved ones was detrimental to Poe's life and health, it also inspired him to write many famous poems that still move people today. Poe was one of the first American poets to become famous while he was alive and is still considered one of the most talented writers in America and other European nations. He is admired by all and still continues to leave a very powerful legacy. His different perspectives on death, whether it is a more ideal notion of death or a denigrating idea of death, become the foundation for other writers to appreciate his writing and ideas..
