Q.3 Nurses as part of regulated healthcare professionals are responsible and required to comply with nursing practice standards, codes and guidelines (NMBA, 2016). The nurse in the case study violated standard 1.4 of the Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses. According to standard 1.4 the professional nurse should comply with "legislation, regulations, policies, guidelines and other standards or requirements relevant to the context of practice" when making decisions because this will be the nurse's foundation in providing high quality services ( NMBA, 2016). The nurse in the scenario did not follow the hospital policy regarding “Between the Flags” or “red zone” and a doctor should be notified in this condition. Furthermore, the nurse's failure to respond effectively to an aggravation violated Standard 6 which states that “the professional nurse should provide safe, appropriate, and responsive quality nursing practice” (NMBA, 2016). In line with this standard, nurses should use applicable procedures to identify and act effectively on such potential and actual risks such as an unexpected change in a patient's condition (NMBA, 2016). Through timely identification and response by the nurse, this will ensure the patient's condition is recognized and appropriate actions are provided and escalated (Australian Commission on Health Care Safety and Quality, 2011). Additionally, the nurse did not immediately report the patient's worsening condition to members of the healthcare team. Therefore, it also ignores standard 4.3 that nurses should work with the interdisciplinary healthcare team and collaborate, communicate and discuss the patient's status (NMBA,2016). The purpose of collaboration and communication with the team is to provide a comprehensive plan of care for the patient and to facilitate early treatments needed by the patient (Cropley,
