Civilizations began to develop in the Middle East near the Euphrates and the Tigris River valley. Being close to a major water system was a huge advancement for them. They used the water to help with irrigation of crops. They developed cities and were known as Sumerians and Akkadians. They also domesticated animals such as cows, sheep, goats and dogs. They advanced significantly with the arts and invented pottery which helped make bowls and utensils. Houses and buildings began to be built and this meant that they were settled and had no intention of moving.
