The Meditations of René DescartesIn 1916 René Descartes wrote "What I wish to conclude is... an absolutely new science which allows us to resolve all the questions proposed on any order of continuous or discontinuous quantities ." (p8 Methods and meditations). He made this ambitious statement at the young age of twenty-three. Renato's ambition will take him far but will prevent him from becoming the Aristotle of the modern age. The Meditations were an attempt to resolve the many questions about life, existence and God. At the time of publication many philosophers did not give up accepting his writings. Today, however, the Meditations are widely read and reviewed throughout the world. In the First Meditation René begins by stating that he knows he doubts his previous opinions and is forced to take a serious look at what he considers to be true. René will go so far as to doubt God and his goodness. His first meditation will end with Descartes seemingly troubled by the nature of God.
