Topic > The environmental effects of consumer packaged goods

According to Davis, “traditional plastics and other nondegradable materials, such as glass and metals, provide a stable material for landfill.” So, even though plastic is often thrown into landfills, if this plastic were another form of packaging, like paper, there would be more space in landfills for the things that need to be thrown there. Thus reducing the amount of waste in the environment and saving space. This is especially important when space is becoming an issue when it comes to landfill sites in certain locations (Hopewell). Traditional plastic landfills pose long-term risks of contamination of soil and groundwater by some additives and plastic degradation byproducts, which can become persistent organic pollutants.
