Such negative consequences can be far-reaching and long-lasting, but some interventions, especially school-level or targeted ones, have shown notable progress in decreasing both the frequency and negative effects of bullying. Legislators have attempted to address bullying by legislating against bullying behaviors; at this point, however, the legal focus has been varied at best. State legislatures tend to focus on prohibiting bullying behaviors without defining, or at least consistently defining, what those behaviors are. The legislation also tends to give much of the decision-making authority to individual school districts so that different districts can decide on overall interventions and methods for addressing bullying. Although case law exists relating to bullying, the courts have been relatively reluctant to get involved for a variety of reasons. Future work in this area should consider addressing legal inconsistencies and providing legislators with clear and consistent information
