Reports state that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death, making it a serious health risk. This is particularly significant because the death of a child represents a loss of life and emotional harm to families and communities. Added to this tragedy are another 5,000 children who have experienced near-drowning emergencies (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). This is also a significant health risk to the community; placing the burden of costs on the community. Healthcare costs for drowning victims are estimated to be $250,000 per year. Drowning is preventable and prevention programs exist that can reduce its impact, however community-based programs are lacking. Since families are the first to respond to a drowning, it is important to provide information that will guide their actions, however prevention is key.
