On "Fast Food Nation" Eric Schlosser weighs in to talk about how fast food changed the way animals were raised to meet people's demands. It exploited a greater percentage of fast food made up of lower quality meats, i.e. taken from low quality animals. In short, the meat doesn't come from one common place, but rather from a series of parts that are pounded together to form an entire burger. To which a single disease like E.coli can spread to multiple meat products. "AND. coli 0157:H7 is a mutated version of a bacterium abundantly present in the human digestive system. Most E. coli bacteria help us digest food, synthesize vitamins, and protect us from dangerous organisms. THE. coli 0157:H7, on the other hand, can release a powerful toxin, called "Vero toxin" or "Shiga toxin", which attacks the lining of the intestine... A single animal infected with E. coli 0157:H7 can contaminate 32,000 pounds of that ground beef” (Schlosser). The probability of the disease spreading is very high since the meat is taken from different animals. In chapter 9 of the book, he provides a case where ground beef was recalled after E was identified. coli. The worst part was that 25 million pounds of meat had been consumed.
