Since before the Romans, Egyptians, and Aztecs, people have always innovated, enriched their culture, and improved life on Earth. But along with everything else there has always been another aspect of human life that has existed as long as we farm or go to school, and that is gambling. Throughout history people have gambled both with the decisions they made and with their own money. Gambling is part of human nature. As humans, people love the feeling of putting everything on the line and hoping for the best; and this is exactly what happened when the gambling industry was introduced to Atlantic City. The city put everything on the line and took full advantage of the casino industry and built around the money that could be made by gamblers. The city flourished and grew in the surrounding areas of southern New Jersey. People came and made a living working in and around the casinos. Because of this, people trusted and continue to trust that casinos would do well. Atlantic City's gambling industry has been successful in the past and must continue to do so for the city to survive. It's safe to say that whatever happens to Atlantic City's gambling industry affects a lot of people. But casinos were not the first form of gambling in New Jersey. Bingo, lotteries, horse betting and the lottery all came before casino gambling. Two forms of gambling, bingo and lotteries, were constitutionally legalized in New Jersey in 1953 (Lehne 64). In A Contemporary Review of Legalized Gambling in New Jersey Lehne adds that bingo and lottery revenues fund the commission's administrative costs (71). Horse racing in New Jersey helped create a new national image for the state (Lehne 77). And state revenues are... middle of paper... multiple factors, and they suffer as a result. But casinos remain confident and experiment with new types of gambling; one is Internet gambling, and while it has flaws, it is on the rise. As for competing with other states, Atlantic City is looking to the future for answers. And the future appears to include fantasy sports betting and, more importantly, becoming a national destination. The city must become an eastern Las Vegas. After all, the money comes from the people who go to Atlantic City, and without them the city would go bankrupt, so Atlantic City needs to become a national destination. Atlantic City's future looks good. With support from the government and the public, the casino industry will flourish again and find something amazing to ensure it gets back on track for the future.
