Topic > Gender Roles in Hildy and Her Girl Friday - 1119

Everything that women are not, these men are; they are important, powerful, often messy as with her colleagues and, above all, in positions of power over Hildy. Specifically, Walter is the epitome of male gender roles due to his good looks and position at the head of the newspaper which would make him responsible for Hildy and her jobs. The Walter archetype can also be seen in the first film we saw Tootsie with the television producer. He is also a well-dressed man of power who manipulates the women around them, into doing what he wants or into a relationship with him. While Walter only has Hildy to manipulate, which he does throughout the film in an attempt to get Hildy to write for the newspaper and never leave him, Ron has an entire cast of women. Ron primarily plays with the emotions of women, Julie in particular, and uses his position of power to degrade and often subjugate women to his ideals. And they very rarely object until Dorothy comes into play
