After reading the material provided to us on second language learning and learner variables, I have come to the conclusion that teaching a foreign language is very complex . It is clear, however, that some factors and differences among students are more influential than others and that I, as a teacher, can influence most of them. In my mind, one of the most important variables is a student's willingness. Students cannot learn anything without will, even if there are many support elements surrounding students. Research shows that students must be willing to use and practice the target language in order for them to be able to acquire it (August 1987). There must be a reason why some students have higher willingness than others, and teachers need to find it. Most of the time, students don't understand the purpose of learning a language and think that it is difficult for them to learn, and we have heard about how it is easier for students to learn L2 if they can find similarities between L1 and L2 (Lightbown & Spada, 2013). Help students learn faster but apply basic knowledge from L1 to L2. On the other hand, if there are many differences between two languages, then it is difficult to learn the language, especially the sounds (Chan, 2009). Other research also shows that learners prefer not to attempt the target language if there is a huge difference between L1 and L2 (Schachter, 1974). Therefore, L1 has both positive and negative influences on learners. As a teacher, you may not be able to do much with students' L1 background, but you can help them find similarities between two languages. Also, keep in mind that some frequently occurring errors may also relate to students' L1 background. The teacher must find out how L1 affects students and teach them how to avoid and exploit their disadvantages and advantages
