Kite Runner After the Taliban lost control of Kabul, an investigation was conducted in Afghanistan. Approximately 42% of Afghans suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Badkhen, 2012). Amir is a wealthy Pashtun child who lived in Kabul, Afghanistan. He had servants Hassan and Ali. Hassan and Ali were Hazara. Hassan and Amir were close, but they were not “friends”. Once upon a time there was a kite fighting tournament won by Amir and Hassan was the kite runner. Hassan chased the last kite and while returning to Amir after catching the kite, Hassan ran into a known bully, Assef. Amir was looking for Hassan. When Amir finds Hassan, he sees Assef with him. Assef asks for the kite but Hassan denies giving him the kite. Assef then rapes Hassan while this may be caused by experiencing or seeing a violent event. An example is rape or physical abuse. When people see others being raped or physically abused, they may develop PTSD due to the fear they feel inside. Other events may include experiencing a war, seeing someone die, or being extremely afraid. They may feel guilty for not having done anything to help the person who is dying and keep it very closely to themselves. Extreme fear can result from drowning, free falling from high or high places, and experiencing near death in the blink of an eye. Symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks, avoidance, and anxiety (Post, ND). The person will avoid people and things that remind them of the event. Even though PTSD can seem really serious, it can be treated. The person can turn to a psychologist to talk about their feelings.
