As students of literature we are often asked to analyze the works of the most loved and admired pieces of literary art. Content in literature often provides information about the author and origin of the piece. As the wonderful world of literary materials comes to life in the hands of its readers, we gain much insight from the authors who have guided us to expand our knowledge of literature and humanity. The powerful hand of capitalist authority and its overwhelming influence on human behavior shapes society. Since it has been established that all human manifestations of society are products of the culture from which it is created, we can understand literature as a reflection of its cultural period and its climate in which authors become historians who courageously mark the world with their creations . book The Hunger Games is a science fiction novel written by Suzanne Collins in 2008. The book is written through the eyes of sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in the nation of Panem in North America. The Capitol exercises political control over the rest of the nation. The Hunger Games are an annual event in which one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the twelve districts surrounding the Capitol are randomly selected to compete in a televised battle to the death. Collin's Hunger Games uses conflict and plot development while challenging character development through survival, humanity, and dignity. Conflict arises from the beginning of the book when Katniss' sister Prim is invited to participate in the annual Hunger Games. Katniss then yells "I volunteer!" while panting. “I volunteer as tribute!” (22). This marks the first sign of survival as she protects her sister and becomes the first volunteer of the 12th precinct…halfway there…done, the murder takes the lives of many. Friends Katniss and Rue team up to defeat the others. Rue is killed and Katniss shows her respect to Rue by covering her with flowers. While many characters have these attributes, the capital does not and this becomes apparent as the book progresses. The capital has no humanity or dignity throughout the book. The book features many different conflicts that most of the characters face. Plot development and character development change throughout the book. These things are used very heavily in the book. Conflict comes together with plot development and character development as the story develops. Collins does a great job putting the book together. Katniss is defined as one of the most affected characters as she changes over the course of the book. What would your life be like if you were put in Katniss' shoes??
