In Stanley Cohen's theory, he tells us that he believes there is a systematic process we go through when a crime is reported in the news. Talk about starting with the problem identified by the media, i.e. TV news, Twitter, etc. After this passage, he goes on to talk about our reaction and concern when we read the news. This is a reaction that journalists want us to have for the next steps to be finalized. The next step is for the police and government to get involved and respond in a way that shows they are doing something about it. When they reply, we are more worried because we think it is a serious matter because it was answered by a high authority. From the response of the higher authorities, this means that they will catch more people who commit the crime which causes more problems along the crime line. The last step of Stanley Cohen's theory predicts that we or others act in ways to protect ourselves. This is what Cohen calls the “prophecy of the filling self,” meaning that in order for us to feel protected we must fill ourselves by doing something or maintaining something to protect ourselves. This could be a knife for example. This is a great example of how the media works. This is a good theory of how the media works as it could be a way for the media to think, to get a good reaction and a good amount of attention
