The Power of LanguageThe unity of a nation is one of the most important factors determining its prosperity. In this case, language has become one of the most influential driving forces in its ability to improve communication with others. Wherever people from one country travel through another country, they bring with them a national identity, which is usually involved in languages. In the United States, most people speak English rather than any other language. However, this nation does not have a law regulating English as a national language. And so, there is a fear that other languages will prevail over English, causing the language barrier to rise within the country. In his essay, Charles Krauthammer argues that the United States must establish English as its official language. Mentions the idea of English prevention from disappearing. In contrast, Robert D. King states in his essay that the United States does not need to legislate English as a formal language. King shares the idea that America has a unique otherness beyond all racial divisions and economic injustices. Furthermore, he states that this national unity is far from being threatened by language. In my opinion, America should legislate to make English the official language to maintain the unity of the nation. The acquisition of English by immigrants has a great impact on Americans. In his essay Krauthammer states that: "One of the main reasons for America's great success as the world's first 'universal nation', for its astonishing and unparalleled ability to assimilate immigrants, was that an automatic part of acculturation was l 'acquisition of English' (539-541). There is no doubt that America is made up of very different people with different cultural backgrounds... middle of paper......and America originally comes from different places and they come together to create one nation. So, diversity is a good thing to remind yourself of your ancestor. However, the national language must be applied to strengthen the bond between people in this country. Ultimately, even though people are fascinated by America's cultural diversity, we still need a national language that everyone knows how to use. . This national language will serve as an identity for its citizens and must be respected. When the new generation arrives in this world, they will share a bond that every citizen will be proud of. Although some say that language and nationality are two different things, in reality they are connected and indissoluble. Last but not least, people in this nation also cannot forget that English brought this nation together into one big solid country.
