This does not mean that individuals or businesses are more likely to commit crimes or that their lifestyle precipitates crime, they are in a bad area and they expose themselves to greater risk due to their location (Prati, 2012). There will simply be areas of the city and businesses that will do poorly. Sometimes individuals don't have much choice about where to live and/or do business. This means they need to be more vigilant and use crime prevention strategies (cameras, motion detectors) to prevent crimes before they happen (crime deterrence) (Argosy, 2016). There are many different criminal theories that could be used for these types of crimes but the most important ones for property crimes would simply be rational choice theory which states that individuals can and do make their own choices and act on those choices. There are consequences for criminal activity when an individual is caught. Some individuals choose to behave criminally knowing that there will be harsh penalties, but they do it anyway.
