Berkouwer's point of view on the question of the imago Dei is based on the “inevitable relationship of man with God”. Berkouwer maintained that “man must always be seen as he is before the face of the Almighty, religiously linked to God in the totality of his existence. Furthermore, this relationship with God is not something added to man, but is constitutive of his being". For Berkouwer, the image of God relies heavily on the notion of relationship and relationship with others and with God as a result of becoming a new self through the redemptive work of Christ. Hoekema comments that: For him [Berkouwer] the image does not consist in certain structural qualities resembling similar qualities in God, but in concretely visible sanctification – that is, in the newness of life to which we are restored in Christ. This renewal of the image is at the same time a gift of God and a task of man.
