The author suggests that racial distinctions are obscured due to a population being forced to live among another population and not understanding the repercussions of this act; for example, slaves taken from West Africa and deported to the Southern United States. Hacking goes on to state that it is possible that “one racial group's desire to dominate, exploit, or enslave another group requires legitimacy in societies” (104). Due to the history of the United States, it is clear that the white race considers itself superior to other races. In fact, according to Ian Hacking, most anthropologists believed that there were only five races. The breeds had a geographical name but were recognized by color.
