Topic > Elvis Presley and King Oedipus - 1288

King Oedipus was born and then abandoned by his biological parents, he was raised by adoptive parents, who treated him like their own son. His extreme obsession with wanting to know himself is what led to his downfall because as he tried to escape his fate regarding the prophecy, the more the prophecy was fulfilled the worse things got for him. The story of Oedipus clearly shows us that we cannot escape destiny because if the gods know our future, there is absolutely nothing that can be done to reverse what the gods have predicted for us. Elvis on the other hand was born into a poor family family. His father was a tobacco picker, who was once imprisoned for cashing a bad check. His mother made sure he was well exposed to gospel music and religion. He performed the ballad "Old Shep" in which he won the singing competition when he was only 10 years old, and for his 11th birthday, they gave him a guitar. With the guitar he was able to play two songs to give to his mother. With his hard work, he managed to make “Love Me Tender” which was his first film and from there his fame began (Clayton 23). Elvis rose from nothing, from a poor family to become a successful star and the king of rock and roll, which led to his downfall. Looking at the differences between these two people, the first notable difference between them is the type of family they have. were born in. Oedipus was born to very rich parents while on the contrary Elvis Presley was born to poor parents. “Oedipus was the son of Laius and Jocasta, king and queen of Thebes” (Sophocles np). He was born to a royal family. The king and queen gave birth to him after being childless for a long time until they had to consult the gods regarding... middle of paper ...... his actions and he had to live in exile together with his daughters. This was the fulfillment of the prophecy foretold by the gods about how his life would end. Works Cited Clayton, Marie. Invisible Archives of Elvis Presley. UK: Parragon, 2005. Print.Clayton, Marie.
