Topic > Importance of Mass Media - 2995

It should come as no surprise that the media has managed to creep into our daily lives and shape the way we think about things. We see and hear stories everywhere through television, the Internet, newspapers, magazines, and countless other sources. Everything we want to know is accessible in seconds nowadays. Our questions are answered, our curiosity is satisfied and our boredom is solved. Of course that can be a good thing, after all how could we educate ourselves about the current events happening around us? How long would it take? Without the mass media it is obvious that we would all be in the dark and this would not benefit anyone even in the slightest. It must have been difficult centuries ago, when technology was not as advanced as it is today, for people to know what was going on around them. They don't have to have known about something as simple as a storm coming, or something as serious as there being a war in another country, or even acquiring purely educational content. It can therefore be said with certainty that the media can be very useful to our society for reasons of security, education, entertainment and knowledge. While it seems absolutely necessary for media to exist, there can be negative aspects to our consumption of that same media. For example, you have to ask yourself: who approves of this media stream? Do they have a hidden agenda? Are they trying to convince us of something we may not have believed in the first place? Is this information real or invented? All of these questions need to be addressed when accepting media coverage into our daily lives. Unfortunately, many do not follow these guidelines before accepting this scattered information because it is difficult to begin with... middle of paper... sing the technology to give people the opportunity for a fair trial. Regardless of the instructions sent to jurors, it is difficult to ensure that those instructions are followed scrupulously, so media coverage will often be a determining factor in a criminal trial, although it is clearly not warranted. Regarding this case in particular, known as “the trial of the century”, it is clear how easy it can be for a defense to influence different categories of people to act in their favor. This case is a classic example of how we, as a society, filter out information from different news outlets and different media sources to influence our thoughts about a topic. The media ultimately influenced the OJ Simpson trial in favor of the defendants, but how they influenced the trial overall turns out to be quite questionable..
