At best, one could argue that this is a case of unrequited love on Gatsby's part. Most people would consider Gatsby's feelings towards Daisy to be extremely unhealthy. As a young man he had a brief affair with her which he never gets over. The idea of her (and of winning her back) becomes the obsession that dominates his life. Even when he finally reunites with her, Nick says that she must have "fallen short of her dream". Yet his devotion to her remains unchanged. Although Gatsby gets what he wants by reuniting with Daisy, he seems to recognize that achieving this goal is not as satisfying as he would have hoped: I could see your house across the bay," Gatsby said.
