While avoiding conflict is not a bad thing, it does so to the point where it seems like it has no will. During his conversation with Veronica, she accuses him of being "rather cowardly," to which he responds that he thinks "it's more that [he's] peaceful" (26). He does not defend himself or reflect on why he is accused of this. When he thinks of Annie, his ex-girlfriend, the most powerful memory he has of her is how she was "easy come, easy go" (32). This relationship is the only one Tony wishes he had pursued. It seems like Tony is fine with doing anything as long as it doesn't require a lot of effort. This lack of self-motivation means he never learns anything beyond what is directly presented to him and even then he only retains the information.
