As Americans living in a society in love with sports and dominated by the billion-dollar industry known as the National Football League (NFL), it is often difficult to face the fact that the United States is the only nation world that is truly dedicated to football. However, studies by modern scientists show that football is not something that players can “indulge” in, as the health risks far outweigh the glory benefits. “League of Denial” examines many cases in which the NFL denied a direct cause-and-effect link to brain injuries, concussions and dementia from playing football. Even though reputable and accomplished scientists took on the challenge of finding a link between chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and the game of football, the NFL shut them down game after game. Without a doubt, recent studies and research are set to change the mindset of the football public... "I wish I had never met Mike Webster. You can't go against the NFL. They will crush you," says Dr Bennet Omalu in the documentary. Clearly, Omalu, an erudite medical examiner, learned the truth about the NFL's ruthlessness the hard way. After reporting early CTE findings in former NFL player Mike Webster, Omalu became the victim of ongoing harassment from the NFL. Omalu's name and reputation were unforgivably vilified: The NFL called the Nigerian-American doctor's research "voodoo," devalued him, and dismissed his intellect and credentials through racist stereotypes. The league denied any link to brain injuries caused by playing football and released its own documents disputing Omalu's claims; falsely reassure people that football is safe. The NFL's artifice did not end in its astonishing racism toward Omalu. When Dr. Ann... at the center of the document... cannot continue to support an activity that exposes children to danger by damaging what is considered the most important muscle in the human body, the brain. “League of Denial” mi it has undoubtedly opened my eyes to the disturbing truth that society has kept from me. Numerous scientists interviewed throughout the film emphasized that humans were not biologically created to play football, and this notion has consistently proven true. It is clear that an athlete must sacrifice his or her body to succeed in football, even if it means serious injury, mental rehabilitation, or even death at a relatively young age. Unfortunately, this “silent epidemic” remains heavily protected by the all-powerful and unbeatable NFL. Even if the future of football appears to be secure, the defense of better health protection will soon triumph over lethal culture.
