The Persians taxed its people, showed little to no respect for the people's ancient ways, beyond exploiting their grain reserves. Many lands rebelled and showed independence from the rulings. When Alexander the Great arrived, he was seen as a savior by many people. Many Greeks were already in Egypt, coming and going for many years, founding trading colonies or as mercenaries. The Greeks held no position of power within the lands. Alexander was welcomed by the Persian governor of Egypt Mazaces. With little to no army and very little help from others in the city, the Persian governor handed everything over to Alexander. As part of the agreement, Mazaces was retained as part of the new administrative system. “The Egyptians hailed him as their liberator from Persian hegemony.”(1) The Egyptian people had no problem giving Alexander the double crown of lands. He was hailed by the people as a savior and liberator. He was anointed pharaoh in November 332 BC.
