Expanding my cultural competence allows me to comfortably socialize important biases with culturally diverse clients. Seeing as culturally competent means being aware of the history, experiences, values ​​and lifestyles of various multicultural groups within society. As well as understanding the impact of oppression, racism, sexism, clinical work politics, institutional barriers, and understanding the functioning of sociopolitical systems in the United States that affect minority groups (Sue, 2006). This also means becoming aware of how my cultural identity has negatively impacted racism, a step highlighted by PISAB. In becoming an upcoming white social worker, this step of learning my racial identity was crucial. It gives me the opportunity to feel comfortable talking about past and present injustices with my clients of color.
