Topic > Essay on Cruise Tourism - 1060

During my research, this article struck me because over the years, cruise tourism has been the fastest growing category of recreational tourism. It is recognized as a dynamic and successful sub-sector of the global tourism industry, among the major cruise lines occupying the highest ranks of the tourism and leisure sector. Unfortunately, due to the coastal and marine environment, indigenous economies, and the sociocultural nature of port areas, cruise tourism has grown into a vast concern. This article on cruise tourism issues discusses selective concerns about this particular industry through a responsible tourism lens. Environmental Issues When addressing numerous issues related to cruise tourism, environmental issues affecting the cruise industry are of concern. A cruise ship produces quite a large amount of waste streams. Some particular waste streams include oily bilge seawater, ballast seawater, and atmospheric gas emissions that are usual for most deep-sea tourism. However, there are other specific waste streams when dealing with cruise ships, which are wastewater management, engine air emissions and solid surplus. Wastewater becomes a problem in the cruise tourism industry, which is why wastewater treatment has been advanced in recent years. “Behavioral procedures on board cruise ships are often less popular given the inadequate space available for the full suite of processing systems normally found on land” (Klein, 2011). Regarding air emissions from fuel, the article explains that air emissions from ships are an obvious basis for pollution. According to the text, this has resulted in approximately 60,000 deaths worldwide each year, and is estimated to increase by 40% by 2012 d...... middle of paper ...... when it comes to the industry of tourism is not what you can get away with but what is the most appropriate and "responsible" behavior for the environment. If I were to face this particular challenge, one step I would take is that when it comes to cruise companies, they need to be more clear and consistent about what they do and what they don't do. As for responsibility, to have it you need to understand the sense of responsibility. For example, when discussing this industry, parties such as investors and customers should be able to effectively regulate the different functions of the system and also have knowledge of the impact of each vessel and route. Finally, it is important that detailed information is available which will also help stakeholders in local communities make judgments about the responsible behavior of cruise lines and the industry itself.
