“The Tell-Tale Heart” is one of Edgar Allan Poe's greatest fictional stories. He is known for his abhorrent and insane murder; a very wild and emotional story. Similarly, Nathaniel Hawthorne's famous novel, The Scarlet Letter, is famous for its frankness about sexual conflict. Both writings possess similarities regarding changed characters, related symbolism, and significant midpoints. Because of these comparisons, it is fairly certain that Hawthorne found inspiration in writing The Scarlet Letter after reading “The Tell Tale-Heart.” Edger Allan Poe is one of the most famous and controversial authors of many short stories and novels. It is generally known for its Gothic genre which mainly deals with the darker elements of the human condition and the supernatural, including a feeling of horror, supernatural and darkness. Additionally, elements such as the setting should look gloomy: rain, storms, etc. The tone and atmosphere of the story should be mysterious and create suspense and fear. Poe is not like other authors who end their stories with a happy ending; rather the ending of his work is gruesome and usually does not give the reader a conclusion. Because of his unique writing, critics have placed him “first among American artists” (Rahn). Common themes of Poe's work consist of murder, revenge, and madness. "The Tell Tale-Heart" is one of his most popular Gothic writings in which the narrator struggles to prove his sanity rather than his innocence. In his late teens, Hawthorne refused to thrive in a customary profession, "I will not be a doctor and live by the diseases of men, nor a minister live by their sins, nor a lawyer live by their quarrels. Furthermore, it is the combination of the old and new text within a narrative. This may be why the tale of Poe includes changes, and Hawthorne's novel includes an important note in the center of his novel Kopley helps by reinforcing this idea: “The tradition of Providence, two symmetrical halves of a literary work, suggesting the Old Testament and the New Testament.” (Kopley). Edgar Allen Poe became one of the most influential authors regarding Gothic literature.
