Topic > The Relationship between Prospero and Caliban - 994

At the beginning of the play, Caliban and Prospero had a relationship similar to that of a father and son. Prospero took care of Caliban and taught him to speak. Caliban also taught Prospero how to live on the island by showing him places to get food. I think Caliban was naive and innocent at first, with no bad intentions. She truly felt that Prospero was her father, or a king, and indeed it was a king she loved. For example, Caliban in Act 1, scene 2 states “And then I loved thee.” Their relationship was one of love and a desire to help each other. After Caliban attempted to rape Miranda, Caliban and Prospero's relationship changed dramatically. Prospero became extremely hostile to Caliban and insulted him in their first conversation in the book in Act 1, Scene 2, “Thou poisonous slave, taken by the devil himself. On your wicked dam, come out!" It is easy to see how their relationship has changed dramatically since then. Caliban also hurled curses at Prospero: As evil dew as ever my mother wiped with raven's feathers from unhealthy marsh drops on them both! A blow from the south-west on you and will blister you! This certainly would not have been the way they would have spoken to each other if they had still loved each other. Their relationship was now one of hatred and revolt of Prospero's rejection of him after what he had done. However, Caliban, being a savage, was probably simply listening to the calls of nature. After all, all nature needs to procreate and Caliban was simply following his instincts. Miranda was the only girl on the island who was old enough to procreate, so Caliban's actions were valid, at least to him. Also, Calib...... middle of paper ......nces for which Caliban's actions affected his relationships with others, was not due to sudden changes in character, but rather the way he had been raised and the impact of people's actions on him that led to the final blow. Additionally, the relationship between Caliban and Prospero changed in various ways throughout The Tempest, where at one point it was a love relationship, and at another point it was a hate relationship. However, looking at the text as a whole, the overall relationship they both had was still that of master and slave. Even though they had a loving relationship at the beginning of the story, theirs was still a relationship of superiority and inferiority. By the end of the show, their relationship is back to what it initially was. So, their relationship didn't actually change throughout the show, but what did change was how they talked to each other throughout the show.
