Military studies are relevant to women's history, serving to shed light on the extremely challenging conditions under which women served successfully or in support of the armed forces Americans. A better understanding of this aspect of history serves to inform the contemporary debate about women in the military and provides a useful field of study for women seeking to enter the profession of arms. Throughout history women have fought for many rights, because they felt they should be considered equal to their male colleagues. They fought for some rights such as: the vote, the possibility of having a job and the right to fight in the army. Women in the military has been a hot topic for a long time and still reigns today. The controversy with having women fight with men at war is the fact that they have a different physical build, deal with stress and emotions differently, are more susceptible to injury, and simply don't have the killer instinct needed to carry out the work. This controversy is true because our society has assimilated to gender ideologies of what the role of women and that of men should be in all media. Historical View (Theme) Women have always been part of the American military. Women served in or with the military in myriad roles. Their different roles included nurse, doctor, laundress, armaments worker, and fighter. So, as we can see, most of the service by women has been in secondary roles. American women have demonstrated their martial courage and proficiency in every U.S. war. (Piccolo, 2012). Women have been serving in the military since 1776. (Small, 2012). They served in wars such as: the Revolutionary War, the War of...... middle of paper...... information that allows some information to be assimilated more easily than others. Bem argues that there are individual differences in the degree to which people maintain these gender schemas. These differences manifest themselves through the degree to which individuals are sex-typed.” (Freebase). While this is very true, it doesn't mean that changing our perspective is impossible. Just like anything in life, it takes time for progress to actually take full effect. Women in the military is something that will take a long time because it has to start with people who want to see women first and foremost as equal human beings who deserve equal opportunities in all aspects, just like their male counterparts. People will have to be willing to put aside their old traditional views, so that they can begin to view women in the military from a new liberal state of mind..
