Some of our rituals were created out of necessity. Having a child with autism you will learn rather quickly the importance of routine and structure. Many of our mundane daily rituals were created with him in mind to help reduce anxiety, such as our bedtime routine. Every night, kids know it's time to go to bed at eight, even on weekends. When it's time to go to bed, my son and daughter will use the bathroom and brush their teeth. Once they are in bed, my husband or I, or sometimes both, go to their rooms to kiss them goodnight and say their nightly prayers. Even though children have memorized their prayers, this has been their bedtime ritual since they were newborns.
