The short story underlines the existential aspect according to which the ability to choose lies with the luckiest individuals. An individual's duty in life is to ensure balance between work and leisure, Kafka suggests that if one failed to do so, one would be nothing more than the offspring of an insect. Before and after Gregor's transformation, he is portrayed as a "someone" profoundly stripped of all integrity and individuality. The character's individual nakedness is further considered when his reaction to the transformation is highlighted: "transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect" (Kafka, 296), his lack of care or even awareness for his own being is a push towards the men of the increasingly detached civilization have inserted them. Gregor, unconsciously, does not consider his state: “the next train left at seven; to notice he would have had to hurry like crazy and his samples weren't even packaged” (297).
