Poetry introduced to the world by sonnets which consist of fourteen lines in a stanza. Love is one of the most popular themes that most people would think of when it comes to sonnets. Love is an emotion that people can identify with because everyone has a different opinion and experience when it comes to love. Edmund Spenser's sonnets “Amoretti LXXV One Day I Wrote Her Name” and “Amoretti and Epithalamion XXX My love is like ice, and I like fire” are the two sonnets that catch my attention. Both sonnets are a form of Spenserian sonnets due to the different rhythmic patterns compared to the other sonnets. Both sonnets are written in modern English, where the sonnets are easier to understand than Shakespearean sonnets. In sonnet LXXV, the author compares his love to fire and his lover's heart to ice using simile. There is no clear setting in this sonnet in terms of place and time, but we can see the image of a man trying to win the heart of a woman. Every time the author tries to win her affection, her heart grows colder every time he tries. Reject the author many times and he will not give up. This can be seen as a man trying to win the woman of his dreams in a romantic way or it can be seen as a man stalking the woman he likes and trying to win her heart. Since the woman in sonnet XXX does not want the author's love, he can portray her as if she is just a cold person or as if she is not really interested in the author for different reasons. In sonnet LXXV, the word “strand” rhymes with “hand” and the word “away” in the second line rhymes with “prey”. In sonnet XXX, the word “fire” in the first line rhymes with “desire” in the third line and the word “supplication.” This is the unique style used by Edmund Spenser and appears in every sonnet he wrote. In terms of language, both are written with very little broken English and are easier to analyze than the Shakespearean sonnets. Some examples are words like eek, vain, dost in Sonnet LXXV. It appears randomly in sonnet LXXV and doesn't fit perfectly into the lines because it disorientates the readers a bit. The words make sense in the lines but don't flow with the sentence
