Topic > Born in Germany, Hanya Holm is considered one of the pioneers of modern dance. From a young age she showed a particular interest in modern dance and soon enrolled at Mary Wigman's school in Dresden, Germany. There, Holm became the primary dance instructor and soon became a master of Wigman's modern dance ideology. This ideology was strongly focused on the emotional aspect so acclaimed in modern dance (Ambrosio 94; Encyclopædia Britannica). After Holm's great success in Wigman's dance school, in 1931 she was sent to the United States by Wigman to found the Mary Wigman School in New York City. Later, in 1936, this school became Hanya Holm Studio, where he concentrated his teachings on both technical aspects and expression. In reality, I didn't start this reflection as I suppose others of my age did. This means that I didn't actually choose a single person and start my search from there. Instead I started by searching for “modern dance poses” in the Google search bar. From there I was fascinated by this charismatic woman and found not only her background, but also her legacy of success incredibly interesting. Another thing that intrigued me about Hanya Holm is that she has choreographed Broadway musicals. And as a fan of both Broadway and musicals, I knew that my decision to research a woman who had inspired my dancing from a young age was completely justified. The most popular dance sequence in my childhood was Kiss Me Kate and I was surprised that I never knew who choreographed my favorite childhood dance sequence. This woman not only inspired me with her choreography, but she was the first of her kind to promote choreography not only for the art form of dance but also for musical theater during the revolution known as modern.
