IntroductionSport is an important element of British culture and is one of the most popular recreational activities of British citizens. Athletes today are heroes when they break physical barriers, endure adverse conditions, overcome impossible obstacles and push their bodies to the limits. On the other hand, heroines are defined differently: thoughtfulness, kindness, motherhood and morality. According to these female characteristics, there is a discrepancy in becoming a sports heroine. Throughout the history of sport there have always been a small number of adventurous women who have challenged gender roles, taken up “manly sports” and broken records equal to those of male sporting heroes. But public response was ambivalent and women were labeled “masculine” or “weird.” According to this, the central elements of this essay should be based on the role of women in sport and how male domination over women also dominates in sport over the centuries. . The essay is divided into six paragraphs with different titles, but containing related information on gender issues in sport. The first paragraph contains basic information on gender and gender relations and also provides an introduction to women's empowerment in general and in sport. The following paragraph describes gender inequality and demonstrates some examples of how women were viewed in sport and the norms included in women's sports. In the third paragraph we find information on the history of sport and how women have had to fight to assert their rights. The fourth paragraph is about the development of sport in Great Britain and what it leads to achieving equal opportunities. The following part provides the theories of Althusser and Bourdieu.
