The codes varied from state to state but were generally very cruel, giving slave owners rights such as being able to own all slaves' offspring and the ability of inflicting cruel punishments with little or no purpose.Bacon's Rebellion: An armed rebellion in 1676 led by Nathaniel Bacon against the governor of Virginia, William Berkeley, because of his refusal to drive Native Americans from Virginia for personal gain. Unconverted children of existing church members could join the Puritan church. The Midway Covenant helped narrow the differences between the regular members of the church and the elected members of the church and weakened the power of the church.
